Permanent vs. seasonal Christmas lights: what's the difference?
Seasonal lights go up each fall and come down after the holidays. Permanent lights stay mounted under the eaves all year and cost several times more up front.

The short answer
Seasonal Christmas lights are strands clipped to the roofline each fall and taken down after the holidays. Permanent lights are LED strips mounted in a track under the eaves that stays up all year and runs from a controller or phone app. The trade is money up front: Fixr puts a typical seasonal install at $250 to $650 a year, and permanent systems at $3,000 to $3,500 on average.
Which one makes sense comes down to how many years you plan to stay in the house, how much roofline you want lit, and whether you want lights for more than one season a year.
How each one works

Seasonal lights
An installer hangs strands along the gutters, gables and peaks, wraps trees, and plugs everything into an outdoor outlet, usually on a timer. After the season, the lights come down and go into storage, or back to the installer if they were rented.
Fixr's guide puts seasonal installation at $2 to $5 per foot for materials and labor, and says most companies include removal in the installation package. When removal is billed on its own, Fixr lists $125 to $350 per project. Our Christmas light installation cost guide breaks those numbers down by home size and stories.
Permanent lights
Permanent systems use LED nodes set in a channel or track that runs along the roofline. Trimlight, one brand, says its channel mounts under the eaves, behind the gutters and trim, and that it doesn't attach anything to the gutters because of the water that runs through them. Trimlight says its control box typically mounts on an inside wall of a garage or under a carport.
Because the LEDs change color and run patterns, the same lights can do warm white at Christmas, team colors on game day and a plain white accent light the rest of the year. Fixr notes that permanent lights are programmable from a phone app.
What permanent lights cost
Published ranges come mostly from the companies that sell them, so read them as starting points:
- Fixr: an average of $3,000 to $3,500.
- Trimlight: most installations fall between $18 and $35 per linear foot.
- JellyFish Lighting: $25 to $35 per linear foot installed, with most homeowners spending $3,000 to $6,000. One controller covers 263 feet; an extra controller runs $650 to $850.
- Govee, citing HomeGuide: $20 to $40 per foot for lights and installation, or about $2,000 to $8,000 for 100 to 200 feet. Govee also sells do-it-yourself kits from $2.99 to $5.30 per foot.
Trimlight names home size, roofline shape and the number of zones as the three biggest cost drivers. Multiple peaks, dormers and steep pitches add time and material on any system.
When permanent pays for itself
Trimlight says permanent systems often break even within two to four years against repeated seasonal installs. That's a seller's figure, so run your own numbers.
Take a house with 150 feet of roofline. At the published per-foot rates, a seasonal install costs about $300 to $750 a year, and a permanent system about $2,700 to $5,250 once. Matching the middle of each range, $3.50 a foot seasonal against $25 a foot permanent, is $525 a year against $3,750, which breaks even in about seven years. At the cheap end of permanent and the expensive end of seasonal, it's under four years. At the other extremes it's more than 17. That's arithmetic on the published ranges, not a quote.
The things that tip it toward permanent: you plan to stay put for many years, you'd use the lights for more than Christmas, or you have a tall roofline that costs more to reach every fall. The things that tip it toward seasonal: you may move in a few years, you only want lights for six weeks, or you want trees and bushes lit, which a roofline track alone doesn't cover.
Upkeep and lifespan
Trimlight rates its bulbs and channel for 50,000 hours of use. At six hours a night, every night, that's close to 23 years; at Christmas only, far longer. Fixr notes that when a permanent light goes out, a small fee is usually charged for the replacement. Warranties vary by brand: Govee lists a 3-year limited warranty on its permanent lights. Ask any installer for the warranty in writing and what a service call costs once it ends.
Seasonal lights wear out faster because they're handled, stored and rehung every year. Check each set for broken sockets and frayed wires before it goes up.
Getting up the ladder
The safety case for having someone else do it is real either way. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission estimates about 14,900 people were treated in emergency rooms for holiday decorating injuries in the 2023 season, about 160 a day, with nearly half involving falls. Permanent lights take that climb out of the yearly routine once the track is up. Seasonal lights put someone on a ladder twice a year, so hire it out if your roofline is high.

Timing in the Tulsa area
Tulsa's average first freeze is November 3, according to the National Weather Service, and its average last freeze is March 29. Seasonal lights have one window: up in November, down after the holidays. A permanent system isn't tied to the holidays, so there's no reason to rush one into a November slot if you're still comparing options.
Common questions
How much more do permanent Christmas lights cost than seasonal?
Several times more in the first year. Fixr puts seasonal installation at $250 to $650 and permanent systems at $3,000 to $3,500 on average. Vendors quote permanent lights at about $18 to $40 per foot installed, against $2 to $5 per foot for seasonal.
How long does it take permanent lights to pay for themselves?
It depends on your roofline and the prices you're quoted. Trimlight claims two to four years. At the middle of the published ranges, 150 feet of roofline breaks even in about seven years.
Can you see permanent lights during the day?
The track sits under the eaves. Trimlight says its channel is made to match the color of the roofline so the lights are hardly noticeable during the day. Ask to see an installed house in daylight before you buy.
Do permanent lights attach to the gutters?
Trimlight says no: its channel mounts under the eaves, behind the gutters and trim, and it avoids attaching to gutters because of the water that runs through them. Ask any installer where their track mounts on your house.
Are seasonal lights still worth it?
Yes, if you may move within a few years, only want lights at Christmas, or want trees, bushes and the entry lit along with the roofline.
Seasonal lights, planned in writing
Our lighting service is seasonal: rooflines, trees and entries for homes in Jenks, Bixby, Glenpool, Sand Springs and Sapulpa. We agree the design, schedule, deposit and takedown in writing before anything is ordered, then come back for the takedown after the season. See how our lighting season works or send us a few photos of the house.
